My manatee memories date back to the 1960s when I visited my grandparents in Miami Beach. They lived within walking distance of the expansive Miami shoreline, and their home abutted a canal.

I’d spend lazy afternoons casting my fishing line off the canal into the water, my feet dangling over the seawall. Decades ago the brackish waters were unpolluted and flush with seagrasses.
